Why We Celebrate - from @tverma29

I'll never forget the day the day the phone rang.  It was hot and sunny.  June 2nd.  Rob's unit had rolled over an IED in Iraq, and he was injured.  I made my way to the German hospital as quickly as I could, and sat by his bed.  He was in bad shape.

He fought his way back, though.  Slowly but surely, his body healed.  He embodied the phrase mind over matter - giving up wasn't an option for him.  The doctors were impressed with his progress, but wanted to send him home to get some rest.  I was all for it.  He wanted no part of it.  He was determined to return to his unit in Iraq, to finish his tour with the men he was so proud to lead.

One short month later, he did just that.  I don't know if I've ever felt as much pride as I did when I watched him board that plane.  As he climbed the steps to the transport, his doctors, nurses, and fellow wounded gathered and applauded.  He rejoined his unit on the July 4th.  It was his own personal independence day.

It's the courage of soldiers like him - that's why we celebrate.

Celebration (from @rickcoplin)

On this July 4th holiday weekend: Flag, Dog tags, Bible, dress bow ties for Lt. Colonel Fred J. Coplin, US Army WWII (Intelligence, stateside), US Army Reserves (Fort Knox, medical unit) until his death in 1974. Service medals & 21 gun salute bullets from my dad’s funeral are mounted behind the flag. Dad was intensely proud of America and grateful for being able to serve our country. He was a great dad & still influences me.

His brother, Guy Richard Coplin, whom I am named after, was killed in action over Belgium while a B-24 (I think) tail gunner on May 19th, 1944; he is buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, Netherlands.  He fought for our freedom in the 578th Bomber Squadron, 392nd Bomber Group, Heavy.

Several other relatives have served including both grandfathers (Army), my stepfather (Navy, USS Duncan), my uncle (Air Force), various cousins (Air Force, Marines), my father-in-law (USS Oriskany), my brother-in-law (Navy, USS Dale).

Why do I celebrate Independence Day? (from @elbiddulph)

  • I celebrate to honor my heritage; my parents were German immigrants and I clearly remember their patriotic pride the day they became citizens of this great country
  • I celebrate to honor my son, who served in the U.S.Army, 82nd Airborne, including combat overseas, to help support the rights of the people in other countires that we enjoy every day in the USA
  • I celebrate the equality and unalienable rights of people to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, outlined by our founding fathers in the Declaration of Independence; they are far too precious to not be celebrated, at least once a year.
  • I celebrate with pride as an American and believe it is important to commemorate the birth of our nation
  • I celebrate because reflection on history is a healthy foundation for a great future
Happy birthday, USA!

Why We, The Wilbur Family, Celebrate Our Independence (from @rockstarjen)

We celebrate for so many reasons, it's tough to list them all, but here's a start:
  • To recognize all the sacrifices those before us made so we can be free to do what we want this weekend (and any weekend).
  • To give props to those who are sacrificing right now to do the same. Not just the men & women officially serving our country, but also their families who make financial, emotional and physical sacrifices every day. And they often go rewarded or even recognized.
  • For our friend Eric, who has served more than his share of tours of duty in the Middle East - and has experienced things the majority of us can understand or imagine.
  • For DJ, the birth father of our son. He's is a Marine who will be deployed this fall.
  • For Bre, our son's birth mom, who will miss her husband while he's in training this summer and off across the ocean later in the year.
  • For Caroline, the woman who helps raise our boy during the day while I work. She is a Navy wife waiting for her much loved husband to come home soon.
  • And most certainly for our 5-month old son, Ayden Blue. He doesn't quite understand what the meaning of "being free" is yet, but I hope he will appreciate and honor those that made it possible for him to live a life that gives him the freedom to be whatever he wants to be. And to throw down this jaunty little smile like he know more than he does.

With big bear hugs and much thanks to all that helped make it all possible,
Jen, Ronnie and Ayden

Why We Celebrate-How & Why Do You? | Social Media For Smart People

I remember a story my Mother told me when my parents were just married and they lived on the small income Daddy got while in Air Force they went to a local grocery store that had a contest going. They had the serial numbers called out on their $1.00 and won a shopping cart of groceries.

Listening to that story had me thinking what was it like to be young couple living in a new city and state, on top of that newly married. How many times are military families going through these experiences? Moving ( lots), being in new cities (lots), and living on limited budgets?

Wish I knew where all those baby pictures were and I could show you where it all started 53 years ago. I do know this…I am grateful each year for every service man and woman who devotes a part of their life to serve out country.

Thanks to Michele Price (aka @prosperitygal) for sharing this memory!

One of those stories was about my Great Uncle Sieb, who served in World War II. He was part of the 10th Mountain Division Force and received a bronze star and purple heart for his heroic service. That is the part of the story I hadn’t heard. The part I did remember dad telling was how one day my great uncle was forced to fire on a German soldier running at him attempting to take his life. My uncle’s shot hit the man and only afterward did my uncle realize he was no more than 16. They both cried as the young soldier died in my great uncle’s arms.

Dad sent my video to my great uncle, and he told dad how much he appreciated it. A few days later I got a letter from him. It was to say thank you, but also to reiterate what a tough time that was, what sacrifices each of the soldiers who serve make and how nice it was to be remembered.

Thank you to my good friend Justin Goldsborough for sharing his story and why he's participating in #WhyWeCelebrate!
